Blogging with kids is not for the faint of heart. Especially when your kids are all of different ages and all have many different needs. The older girls need help with homework while the younger ones need a bath and to go to sleep. All while you’re trying to work on a blog post.
There are also other challenges like trying to make nutritious meals instead of throwing some nuggets at them. Willow, the spunky three-year-old, was to “help” with homework by drawing on said work or taking the school issued iPad and running away. Getting everyone into the new routine of having a new baby around had been kind of challenging as well. As I am trying to work, the chaos or mom guilt sets in. If you get my drift… Things are a little crazy sometimes!
So where does blogging fall in with all of this? Usually it falls by the wayside. After a long day I’d rather fall asleep then try and write something even worth reading. I’m trying to break that cycle though, because blogging is important to me. If anything it is a creative outlet. Since it is important to me I have made an extra effort to ensure that I stay on track. Here is what I have done:
- Keep a planner or two – I actually have two planners. One for the blog and one for everything else. I’ve tried combining the two in the past but all of the appointments and to-do lists are distracting. Having a separate planner for the blog allows me to plan post for Instagram and Facebook. Maybe one day I’ll find a planner that will allow me to keep everything separated, for now though, I have two.
- Plan ahead – black out some time to come up with post ideas. I did this during the 3 hour glucose test while I was pregnant with Waylon – I got the whole year planned out!
- Get yourself a notebook – I am currently writing blog post out in a spiral notebook, in March! This helps me be able to just type and not think too much. Using the note book allows me to write when I have the time.
Doing those three things have relatively kept me on track. Is helps me feel more organized as well. Writing posts out this in advanced, and scheduling them to be live at a later date takes a lot of the pressure off. This also allows for consistency and the ability to pepper in random posts when inspiration strikes. The moral of the story: if it is important to you, make the time for it, even if it’s just a few minutes a day!
