To quote Ma from the Golden Girls… “Picture it… Sicily 1892..” ok.. not really 1892, well at least for me not that far back… Probably more like 2005. That’s when I started wanting to learn more about cooking.
I was very young and pregnant with my first kiddo. I had just move out, and quickly realized, if I was going to have a little human, that little human couldn’t live off of top ramen, pizza rolls and taco Bell with a mountain dew chaser. Cause yeah.. that’s how I used to eat.
I’ve come a long way since then, three kids, a house and a whole slew of recipes under my belt, I feel all grown up and stuff! This recipe reminds me of my grandpa, because when I lived with my grandparents, I would come home from school, or go over to hang out after I moved out, and sometimes the house would be filled with this amazing smelling sauce! Once I smelled it I knew grandpa was making his sauce.
It really isnt complicated to make this delicious meaty sauce! You can make it in less than 30 minutes if you wanted to. I think it tastes waaaay better if it is slow Simmered. Paired with a green salad and some garlic bread it will have everyone wanting to more.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb of ground beef
- 3 cloves of garlic minced
- 1 onion diced
- 1 bell pepper diced
- 5-6 crimini mushrooms chopped
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 can tomato sauce
- 1 cup low sodium beef broth
- 1/2 Tbsp thyme
- 1 Tbsp basil
- 1 Tbsp rosemary
- 2 Tbsp Oregano
- Salt and pepper
In large skillet heat the olive oil and brown meat over medium heat. Season with salt and pepper.
Chop and mince the veggies as needed. Once the meat is almost cooked through, throw those in the pan and sautee until tender.
Deglaze the pan with the red wine vinegar. Season the meat and veggies mixture with the herbs.
Add the remaining ingredients, turn down to simmer and cook for 3-4 hours.
Serve over warm pasta and enjoy
