Mom… I’m bored!

This is probably something you’ve heard throughout this summer, and summers before. If you haven’t heard this yet, you are either a rockstar at planning activities or your kids aren’t old enough to tell you about their boredom.

Having an 11 year old, a 12 year old and a 1 year old, I’M never bored, but the kids sure as heck are! My two older girls always seem to be extremely bored, or even claim to be dying of boredom.

There are a few sayings that I’ve heard such as “only boring people get bored” or “you aren’t being creative enough.” While these things sometimes apply, kids need help figuring out what to do. This is true for our family as we live out of town and these chuckle heads can’t yet drive.

These ideas are for older kids, and seem to work around here… Most of the time.

What to do when you’re bored

  • Draw a picture. If you don’t know how to draw, then it’s always good to practice.
  • Take a walk, as long as you feel safe with your kiddos doing this, live in a safe area ect.. It is good for them to take a walk!
  • Listen to new music. I cannot count how many times my friends and I would just listen to music, it helped the time pass quickly and we learned to love a variety of artists.
  • Go to the library. This is more of a family event but it gets the kids, and yourself out of the house. The library for our little town has a plethora of things for kids of all ages to do. A few weeks ago they taught the kids how to make their own instruments.
  • Read a book! That they got from the library, my kiddos love ghost stories so they both just picked out books with a creepy vibe for fun!
  • Have a movie day. It sounds crazy but with all the stuff that goes on in the summer, sometimes they just need to veg out and watch a few classics.
  • Take up crocheting or knitting. I’m still trying to figure knitting out, but i’m crocheting like a boss! Both of my girls are starting to catch on.
  • Go swimming. That’s another family fun event!
  • Have a camp out in the living room or back yard! Shelby and Emory and I used to have a camp out in the living room every Friday night. Girls night is something they still ask to do! Now that we have a yard, they camp out in tents.
  • Have a water fight! Self explanatory…
  • Learn to cook a new dish. My older kiddos have been helping in the kitchen since they were three and four. They weren’t allowed to touch the knives or anything stabby, like a scewer or anything. But they could count out olives, or wash veggies and fruits. I had my niece and nephew mash up nanners in a big baggy for banana bread. They loved it!
  • Do make overs. The giggles are endless with this activity!

While this isn’t an endless list of activities, it should help ease some of the boredom!
